Producer's Notes
The 2012 Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon opens up to notes of rose petals, blackberry jam and cocoa followed by tobacco, bing cherries and a touch of pencil shavings. In the mouth, a soft attack of shaved dark chocolate, sweet vanilla, mocha and caramel adds great complexity to the beautiful dark fruit. The mid-palate weight is layered & well balanced with seductive and silky integrated tannins evolving to some smoke notes coming from the new Taransaud French Oak. This expressive and harmonious cabernet is a stellar expression of this unique mini-valley vineyard location, leaving us with that signature powerful, long and lingering ROY finish.
Wine Advocate: 96 Points
Another big-time winner from Shirley Roy is her 450 cases of 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate. This is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot with an opaque purple color and a fabulous notes of lead pencil shavings, licorice, roasted herbs, damp soil and oodles of blackberry and cassis fruit. It is long, rich, multilayered and impressively endowed. This wine was aged 27 months in new Taransaud oak, which is soaked up beautifully. Its should drink well for 30 or more years.
This is still a somewhat under-the-radar, small estate dedicated to world-class wines made in a fairly hidden area on the eastern side of Napa Valley known as Soda Canyon, which is essentially in the foothills of the eastern Vaca Mountains. Shirley Roy, who has been the sole proprietress since her husband passed away, has 17 acres planted (originally by Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer for the Roys) that includes 12 blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot. From the vineyard she produces two wines, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Proprietary Red Wine blend.
